Course Rationale:
"Musical Theatre 12" is comprised of three major areas of study: scene and character building, dance choreography and vocal production.
Students will learn and practice theatre performance skills through the creation, rehearsal and performance of a variety of original scene projects. Students will also participate in vocal workshops and large ensemble choreography sessions, working toward the presentation of a class revue show.
Students will explore: technical fundamentals, solo performances, small group performances, character studies, basic musical theatre dance steps/combos, formations, transitions, and the combination of movement and music. Students are expected to have a positive attitude towards themselves, their peers, and the class and to maintain an open, growth-focused mindset.
Students taking this class will also be able to attend and perform their pieces at Thespian Festival Field Trips across BC, Canada and WA State (when safe to do so again).
Assessment and Evaluation:
Students will be assessed in a variety of ways: one on one interviews, self/peer evaluations, & teacher observations of work. All assessment is based on criteria clearly stated to the student at the beginning of each lesson and unit/project.
Active Learning Performances (100%) - Made up of two different types:
- Formative Process Performances/Learning Activities -
These are the in class performances that you create throughout the year. They will usually be the ‘less rehearsed’ pieces that we do in our class. They will follow the “Know, Do, Understand” model and use the creative process. These should help prepare you for our summative performances.
- Summative Performances -
Each term you will be given major projects / performances. These will usually be, but are not limited to, the final performance in a unit that we are studying.
